How to Calculate Amazon FBA Net Profit After All Fees (Most Sellers Get This Wrong)

Most Amazon FBA sellers confuse revenue with profit. Referral fees, fulfillment fees, storage fees, and return costs can consume 35% to 50% of your gross sales price before you account for a single dollar of product cost. Here is the exact formula to find your true net margin.

How to Calculate Amazon FBA Net Profit After All Fees (Most Sellers Get This Wrong)

Key Takeaways

  • Amazon's combined FBA fees (referral plus fulfillment) routinely consume 30% to 45% of a product's selling price before any cost of goods is subtracted.
  • Sellers who omit monthly storage fees on slow-moving inventory understate their costs by an average of $0.87 to $2.40 per unit, per month, depending on season and product size.
  • True FBA net profit equals: Selling Price minus Referral Fee minus Fulfillment Fee minus Cost of Goods minus Storage Fees minus Inbound Shipping minus Returns Reserve.

The Core FBA Profit Formula

Net profit on an Amazon FBA sale is not revenue minus cost of goods. It is revenue minus every fee Amazon charges, minus every cost you incur to source and ship the product.

The complete formula in plain text:

Net Profit = Selling Price - Referral Fee - FBA Fulfillment Fee - Cost of Goods Sold - Inbound Shipping Cost - Monthly Storage Fee (per unit) - Return Rate Allowance

Every term in that formula is a real cash outflow. Omit any one of them and your margin calculation is wrong.

Amazon Referral Fees: The First Major Deduction

Amazon charges a referral fee on every sale. The rate depends on the product category, not the price. Most standard categories carry a 15% referral fee. Clothing charges 17%. Electronics accessories charge 15% on amounts up to $100.00 and 8% above that. Grocery items carry 8%.

On a $39.99 product in the Home and Kitchen category, the referral fee is $39.99 x 0.15 = $6.00. That single fee has already consumed 15% of gross revenue before the product has left the warehouse.

Amazon deducts referral fees automatically at settlement. Sellers do not write a separate check. That invisibility causes many sellers to underweight the fee in their planning models.

FBA Fulfillment Fees: The Second Major Deduction

Amazon's FBA fulfillment fee covers pick, pack, and shipping to the customer. The fee scales with product size tier and weight. Amazon updates these rates annually, typically in February.

As of the 2025 fee schedule, a small standard-size item weighing 6 oz or less carries a base fulfillment fee of $3.06 per unit. A large standard-size item between 1 lb and 2 lb carries a fee of $5.40 per unit. An oversize item between 2 lb and 5 lb carries a fee of $9.61 per unit.

These figures change. Always pull the current rate from Amazon's official FBA fee schedule before modeling a new product.

Monthly Storage Fees: The Cost Sellers Consistently Forget

Amazon charges monthly inventory storage fees based on cubic feet occupied in its fulfillment centers. The standard rate for January through September is $0.78 per cubic foot. October through December, the peak-season rate rises to $2.40 per cubic foot.

A product with dimensions of 12 x 8 x 4 inches occupies 0.222 cubic feet. During standard months, that unit costs $0.17 per month to store. During Q4, that same unit costs $0.53 per month. A seller holding 500 units through November and December pays $265.00 in storage fees alone, before selling a single unit.

Long-term storage fees add a separate charge. Units stored more than 365 days incur an additional $6.90 per cubic foot or $0.15 per unit, whichever is greater, assessed monthly.

Worked Example 1: Kitchen Gadget at $29.99

A seller lists a garlic press at $29.99. Here is the full unit economics breakdown:

  • Selling price: $29.99
  • Referral fee (15%): $4.50
  • FBA fulfillment fee (small standard, 7 oz): $3.22
  • Cost of goods (landed from manufacturer): $6.50
  • Inbound shipping to FBA warehouse (per unit): $0.65
  • Storage fee (standard month, 0.10 cu ft): $0.08
  • Return rate allowance (8% return rate x $3.22 fulfillment cost): $0.26

Total costs: $15.21

Net profit per unit: $29.99 - $15.21 = $14.78

Net margin: 49.3%

That looks healthy. But now the seller runs a 20% off coupon promotion to win the Buy Box. The new selling price is $23.99. The referral fee drops to $3.60. Every other cost stays fixed. Net profit collapses to $5.18 per unit, a margin of 21.6%. Discount pricing compresses margins faster than most sellers model in advance.

Worked Example 2: Yoga Mat at $54.95

A seller lists a premium yoga mat. The product is large standard size, weighing 3.2 lb.

  • Selling price: $54.95
  • Referral fee (15%): $8.24
  • FBA fulfillment fee (large standard, 3 lb to 4 lb): $7.17
  • Cost of goods (landed): $12.00
  • Inbound shipping to FBA warehouse: $1.80
  • Storage fee (standard month, 0.45 cu ft): $0.35
  • Return rate allowance (12% return rate x $7.17): $0.86

Total costs: $30.42

Net profit per unit: $54.95 - $30.42 = $24.53

Net margin: 44.6%

The return rate allowance matters here. Yoga mats have above-average return rates due to sizing and texture expectations. A seller ignoring returns models a margin of 46.2%. The actual margin after accounting for return-related fulfillment costs is 44.6%. On 1,000 units sold per month, that 1.6-point gap costs $256.00 in unaccounted expense per month, or roughly $3,072 per year.

How to Account for PPC Advertising Costs

Pay-per-click advertising on Amazon Sponsored Products is a direct cost of sale for most FBA businesses. It belongs in the unit economics model.

Average cost-per-click across Amazon categories was $1.20 in 2024, according to third-party seller data aggregators. If a seller converts one sale per 8 clicks, the advertising cost per unit sold is $9.60. On the yoga mat above, that addition drops net profit to $14.93 per unit and the margin to 27.2%.

Sellers who track Advertising Cost of Sale (ACoS) at the campaign level but exclude it from unit economics are modeling a business that does not exist.

Taxes on FBA Income: The Final Layer

Amazon FBA income is self-employment income for sole proprietors and single-member LLC owners. The IRS taxes net self-employment income at 15.3% for Social Security and Medicare (Schedule SE) on the first $176,100 of net earnings in 2025, and 2.9% above that threshold.

On $50,000 of annual FBA net profit, the self-employment tax liability alone is approximately $7,065, before federal income tax applies. Most new sellers budget for income tax and miss this separate obligation entirely.

The CalcMoney self-employment tax calculator runs this computation with your actual net profit figure in under 60 seconds. Input your FBA net income after all Amazon fees and costs, and the tool returns your estimated Schedule SE liability and the deductible portion you can claim on Form 1040 Schedule 1.

Use the calculator above before setting quarterly estimated tax payments. Underpayment penalties under IRS rules apply when tax owed exceeds $1,000 for the year and withholding does not cover 90% of the current year liability or 100% of the prior year liability.

Build the Model Before You Launch the Listing

Every variable in the FBA profit formula is knowable before a single unit ships. Amazon publishes its referral fee tables and FBA fee schedules. Manufacturers quote landed costs. Freight forwarders quote inbound shipping rates.

Build the unit economics spreadsheet first. Then run the self-employment tax projection on the resulting annual net income. A product with a 12% net margin before self-employment tax may generate negative after-tax cash flow when the SE tax obligation, quarterly estimated payments, and return reserves are all included.

The CalcMoney self-employment tax calculator handles the tax layer. Apply the FBA profit formula above to get the input number it needs.
